Cyrus McCrimmon is a Pulitzer-prize wining photojournalist who has snapped riveting portraits of diverse people from President Barack Obama to Hollywood star, Will Smith, to farm worker and civil rights activist, Cesar Chavez.
McCrimmon speaks Spanish and loves connecting with people in different cultures. He’s shot a variety of stories from Cuba to Mexico and from Nicaragua to the Dominican Republican.
Following the September 11 attacks, McCrimmon documented how the world was reacting to the terrorist attacks through trips to Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait and Lebanon.
An avid sports fan, McCrimmon has shot numerous Super Bowls and spent nearly a month in Italy in 2006, chronicling the Torino Winter Olympics.
These days, he’s spending a great deal of time shooting food, fashion and fitness and enjoys the challenge of finding perfect light.
McCrimmon, now a freelance photographer, worked at The Denver Post for 15 years. Prior to that, he worked at the Rocky Mountain News from 1987 to 2001. He was part of a team of photographers who won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000 for their photography spot-news coverage of the Columbine High School Tragedy. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, then transferred to Ohio University where he graduated with a degree in visual communications and a minor in Spanish.
McCrimmon lives in Denver with his wife and three children. He enjoys pastel painting, swimming and mountain biking. His secret pleasure is watching Spanish telenovelas. The more twisted the plot, the better.
“A still photograph can etch lasting memories. But it’s also wonderful to share images instantly and open a person’s eyes to the world as you see it.”
